PORT ANGELES – The Port Angeles City Council still intends to restart a Code enforcement program, but they decided Tuesday that they won’t pay for it by raising your taxes.

Mayor Sissi Bruch told KONP that a three percent levy lid lift on property taxes has been taken off the table for lack of Council support, so other funding methods will be evaluated.

The City’s Code Enforcement program, which deals with things like derelict properties, land use violations and animal nuisance complaints, was scrapped in 2012 due to budget issues. The Council has said repeatedly that restarting a two-person department at a cost of up to $200,000 per year is a top priority. Last month the Council voted 4-3 to move ahead with a multi-part plan to raise money for its general fund, but at Tuesday’s meeting the tax hike was shot down.

Other suggestions for raising the revenues included traffic light enforcement cameras and other fines and fees.
