PORT ANGELES – 24TH District Rep. Mike Chapman announced just before noon today that he has secured the funding for the $5 million Morse Creek curve project in Port Angeles that will build a wide, landscaped boulevard down the center of that section of Highway 101.

Chapman’s statement reads:

“During the 2019 Legislative Session, my primary goal was to secure funding for the Morse Creek Curve. I have heard from hundreds of constituents about how important it is to get barriers after the death of Brooke Bedinger who lost her life in June of 2018 while riding her motorcycle on the Morse Creek Curve.

I was able to secure 5 million dollars out of the House Transportation budget for the Morse Creek Curve. The curve will be widened and a tree-lined median will be formed. This is a safety concern that will be fixed in the coming years due to the hard work of the Barriers for Brookie group.”

Chapman’s office has so far not returned our call for further details, and a DOT spokesman told KONP that it may be that the House will still have to meet with the Senate to negotiate a Compromise Budget before the deal is final, but we’ll take Chapman’s statement at face value until we hear otherwise.

The DOT will talk to us about the timing of the road project when more details are in.
