Clallam County – Drivers, be aware that more than 150 law enforcement agencies around the state will be conducting an Emphasis Patrol looking for distracted drivers beginning Thursday, March 28 through April 14.

We all know it’s illegal to use cell phones while driving, stopped in traffic or at a stop light. But distracted driving also includes things like eating, tuning a radio, or attending to pets or children.

A recent report from the Washington Traffic and Safety Commission says that hand held cell phone use was down 40 percent in 2018 from 2017. But while cell phone distraction has decreased, other distractions have increased, and misunderstandings of the law are putting drivers at risk.

Violators are charged $136 for the first offense and $234 for the second.

Participating law enforcement agencies in Clallam and Jefferson Counties include: Clallam and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Offices, as well as Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend Police Departments.
