PORT TOWNSEND, WA – One of the largest Monterey cypress trees in Washington State is rotting on the inside and has to be cut down.

The tree that’s 60 feet tall and 33 feet around is on property owned by John Eissinger and next to his Blue Gull Inn Bed and Breakfast in Port Townsend.

About a third of the 150-year-old tree broke off last week and damaged three vehicles.

Eissinger said a University of Washington tree expert told him the tree is a danger and should be removed.

He says a tree company will use a crane to remove the tree in November, but that about 10 feet of the base of the tree will remain and be made into a bench or a wood carving.
