PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Peninsula is bracing for a wintry week, with the National Weather Service forecasting cold temperatures, snow, and icy conditions that could worsen through the weekend.

Daytime temperatures are expected to stay in the mid-30s to low-40s through Wednesday, with nighttime lows in the upper 20s. A wetter system arriving Thursday night will bring rain to lowland areas and snow to higher elevations, with the Olympic Mountains forecast to receive 6 to 10 inches of snow by Friday morning.

The weekend may bring snow even at sea level as cold air from the Fraser River outflow moves in. Coastal areas like Port Angeles and Sequim could see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while higher elevations may get 4 to 6 inches. Stronger-than-expected outflow could increase snowfall totals along the northern peninsula.

Daytime highs over the weekend may remain near freezing, with nighttime lows in the mid-20s. Gusty winds could create wind chills in the teens, particularly in exposed areas. Hazardous travel conditions are expected on U.S. Highway 101 and mountain passes. Snowy, icy conditions may persist into early next week.
