JEFFERSON COUNTY, Wash. — Two people were arrested after an attempted jewelry heist Tuesday in Jefferson County, leaving their getaway car after a rollover crash and a capsized boat in their wake.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, authorities received reports from a property owner near the Hood Canal Bridge who came home Tuesday to find a man breaking into his storage containers around 8 a.m. He said a blond woman was behind the wheel of their car.

He estimated they made off with around $11,000 worth of gold and jewelry. The man told authorities the two fled the scene in an SUV with covered license plates and, in an effort to stop them, threw a piece of firewood at their windshield, shattering it.

Deputies responded to the call and found the SUV the suspects were reportedly driving. The car was involved in a rollover collision and the two suspects had fled the crash on foot.

Authorities tracked the suspects using a drone, and found the two in a stolen rowboat, the man using a shovel as an oar. The incident quickly turned chaotic as the rowboat started taking on water due to a hole in the bottom of the boat.

The suspects were then forced to swim back to shore, where they were found huddling together in a field with hypothermia symptoms

32-year-old Taylor Johnson and 37-year-old Steven Weldon were booked into the Jefferson County Jail on burglary and theft charges.

The Deputy’s Probable Cause report says that while Johnson was being treated by EMTs she asked, “Did I hit anybody?” After being told that the only thing she hit was a guardrail she replied, “Thank God.”

Jefferson County Prosecutor James Kennedy told KONP it was still unclear whether all of the gold and jewelry reportedly stolen had been recovered, or even whether some it may be at the bottom of Port Gamble.
