SEQUIM — It is no secret the Sequim Wolves girls basketball team is in a major rebuild after three strong seasons.

The rebuilding process was evident last night as the Anacortes Seahawks dominated the Wolves, 48-30.

Like the Neah Bay Red Devils program, Anacortes Head Coach Nate Dunham dedicates extensive time to scouting opponents in the film room. It showed last night as the Seahawks employed a stifling, in-your-face man-to-man defense that disrupted the Wolves’ offensive sets.

Wolves guards Gracie Chartraw and Bobbie Mixon were forced into taking long-distance, low-percentage shots. The Seahawks outscored the Wolves 19-6 in the second quarter, taking a commanding 31-14 halftime lead.

Bobbie Mixon led the Wolves with 11 points, while Gracie Chartraw added 10. Libby Turrella scored five points, freshman Kaiya Robinson hit a three-pointer, and Hailey Wagner added a free throw.

The Wolves will open league play at home against Kingston on Friday night. Anacortes defeated Kingston 61-24 last week.

Meanwhile, the Port Angeles Roughriders will host a home doubleheader against North Mason on Friday. The girls tip off at 5:15 p.m., with the boys’ game to follow at 7 p.m.

In bowling action today, Port Angeles faces Bremerton, and Sequim travels to Olympic, with both matches starting at 2:45 p.m.

In boys basketball, the Sequim Wolves will travel to Kingston tonight for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

The Peninsula Pirates women’s basketball team, 2-2 and ranked fourth in the NWAC, will host the Pirates Classic this weekend. They face Chemeketa at 6 p.m. on Friday, Bellevue at 4 p.m. on Saturday, and Green River at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Neah Bay and Pirates fans can look forward to seeing former Red Devil Ryana Moss in action during the Pirates Classic this weekend. Moss is having a strong freshman season, averaging 8 points and 3 rebounds per game

The Pirates men’s team will compete in the Edmonds tournament, tipping off against Grays Harbor at 5 p.m. on Friday and South Puget Sound at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio.

Antonio Odum of the Peninsula Pirates scored a slam dunk against Green River. The Pirates will play three games in Edmonds this weekend.
