SEQUIM — The Sequim City Council may decide later this month whether to ban firework sales In the city.
Last month, councilors unanimously agreed to hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14.
If a ban is approved, it would take effect next fall, so fireworks sales would be allowed one more season.
Current rules permit sales from June 28-July 5, with first preference given to nonprofit groups benefiting youth.
Sequim banned firework discharges in 2017 after a 2016 advisory vote in which 65.6% supported the measure. However, firework sales have continued.
The move to ban sales of fireworks has been brought to the council by Councilmember Kathy Downer. She says there’s an inconsistency that gives residents the impression they can still discharge fireworks in the city since they’re being sold there.
City staff believe Sequim may be the only city in the state that bans discharges but allows sales.
