PORT ANGELES – More than half a foot of snow fell on lowland spots across the north Olympic Peninsula.

Starting late Thursday afternoon, a modified artic front moved in from the northeast. That ran up against the north side of the Olympic Mountains and caused the normally dry side of the peninsula to pile up snow.

Cars skidded into ditches and travel became a nightmare for many just in time for the evening commute. Morse Creek hill was shut down for a time last night due to the bad conditions and vehicles getting stuck.

All local schools are cancelled today.

The National Weather Service says the threat of more significant snow is now gone. But we will have to deal with very cold conditions. There’s a wind-chill advisory up for the area until tomorrow morning. Wind chills are forecast to hit the single digits. High temperatures will only reach the mid 20’s with lows at night in the low teens.
