PORT ANGELES – If you were stuck or rerouted around the scene of that collision Tuesday afternoon at the top of the Tumwater Truck Route on 101, we have some details from Trooper Weatherwax from the State Patrol as to why the road was blocked for 4 hours.
Weatherwax says it was lucky that no one was seriously injured when 32-year-old Ken Tobin of Port Angeles attempted to elude a Trooper who had tried to pull him over for speeding and reckless driving after Tobin passed him.
Tobin lost control of his White Dodge Ram due to a reported malfunction of the vehicle and crashed into the driver of a Toyota Tacoma. Both vehicles were totaled and came to rest in the westbound lanes.
Weatherwax says she was the Technical Collision Investigator on scene and had to drive about an hour to get there, which contributed to the long investigation. She also confirmed what many witnesses on social media are saying, that a similar truck was seen driving at high speeds, passing cars along Lake Crescent and speeding through the construction zone at the Elwha Bridge before the crash.
Weatherwax says there was alcohol in Tobin’s truck, and he was listed on the jail roster as being booked on a DUI, but was later released. She said charges will be forwarded for reckless driving and possibly eluding a Trooper, but that will be up to the Prosecutor’s Office.
