SHINE – The state Department of Transportation has announced another round of closures for the Hood Canal Bridge that will affect the plans of some travelers.

Beginning Monday, April 10, bridge preservation crews will conduct an in-depth inspection of the bridge that requires opening the draw span multiple times daily. During the draw span openings, the bridge is closed to vehicle traffic, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

The inspection schedule is as follows.

  • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, April 10-14
  • 9 a.m. 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, April 17-21

The typical duration of each draw span opening will close the bridge to traffic for 15 minutes to one hour.

DOT officials said every effort will be made to minimize disruptions to travelers and keep the closures as short as possible.

They said these inspections require daylight to see inside tight spaces and get detailed observations on bridge components and operations.

Bear in mind, this is on top of February’s announcement that the bridge will be closed for four entire weekends in a row, sometime this spring or summer, while they replace the center locks on the bridge.

The exact dates have not yet been announced, only that it will happen sometime between May and September.
