PORT ANGELES – The Winter Ice Village in downtown Port Angeles wraps up Monday January 3rd.
Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce Director Marc Abshire says this year was a successful year, despite last week’s snow that hampered some of the operations and turnout.
Abshire says there seems to have been growth from people outside the area coming to skate.
“And a lot of people from out of town. I mean, just amazing. We had a family who found out about the webcam from Australia, and they were waving to their family in Australia with this skate cam. But we had a lot of people from from Seattle area, Kent and places like that, staying the airbnb’s. And I don’t think they came here for the ice rink, but I think it probably was one of the things that they said. Hey, let’s go spend some holidays up in Port Angeles.”
After having to move it to the spring last year, the skating rink returned for its traditional wintertime run beginning last November. Abshire says the operations is on good financial footing and will be back next year.
After the final skate at nine pm, Abshire says his crews will take a few days to dismantle the tent and rink. The Chamber rents the rink each year from Ice America.
