SEATTLE — Longtime disc jockey, concert promoter and Seafair Hydroplane race announcer Pat O’Day has died. He was 85 years old.

His son announced on social media that O’Day died Tuesday at his home in the San Juan Islands.

As Seattle’s highest-profile DJ of the 1960s, when radio station KJR for a time had the highest listener ratings in the country, O’Day also became the region’s dominant dance promoter, and is credited by many as helping to bring the Seattle music scene to national prominence.

In 1998 O’Day was added to the disc jockey exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

In a Facebook post, his son Jeff O’Day said that his father had managed to beat lung cancer but that the disease wreaked havoc on his lungs.
