PORT ANGELES – A scholarship to honor the memory of Jamye Wisecup, the longtime emergency management planner for Clallam County who passed away unexpectedly on September 11 this year, has been announced by the Homeland Security Emergency Management’s Center For Excellence in Pierce County.

Wisecup’s influence in her field has been far-reaching. Her efforts here in our community influenced similar programs statewide, and led to seven Community and Technical Colleges around the state offering the Homeland Security Emergency Management (HSEM) Certificate and Associates Degree Program.

In 2014, Homeland Security’s Center of Excellence near Tacoma welcomed Wisecup to its Advisory Board. Program Manager Kellie Hale says she had a substantial impact.

“She was just always very supportive of our initiatives, our work plan, and just motivated us to do a good job. And one of my projects was Women In Leadership. So every year, we put on Women In leadership forum and Jamie was just, you know, if she could attend she would drive all the way from Port Angeles to Tacoma and just always wanted to be a part of it. So it’s just her support for what we did and, it was just helpful, you know, and that’s something that we definitely miss.”

To honor Jamye’s memory, the Center will be working with Peninsula College Foundation to establish the Jamye Wisecup Memorial Scholarship/Program Endowment.

It will provide scholarships to attend the Homeland Security Emergency Management Certificate or Associates Degree Program, which is offered at Peninsula College, along with 7 other “Collaborating Colleges” across the state.

If $30,000 or more is raised, the fund will be endowed and will provide an annual award in perpetuity.

If less than $30,000 is raised, annual awards will be made until the fund is depleted.

Clallam County Undersheriff Ron Cameron:

“The whole Emergency Management field has evolved into something that is quite different than it was, say, 10 years ago. It has become much more of a topic and an interest for young folks to enter into this specialized field. Yeah, it would be so nice to hit that $30,000 mark. If they hit 30-thousand dollars, it will be a perpetual endowment, so that every year there would be something available for somebody, as well as the project itself, to support it.”

Donations to the Wisecup Scholarship Fund can be made in two ways: by check to the Peninsula College Foundation, or by giving online.
