PORT ANGELES – The groundbreaking for ten more new homes in the Peninsula Housing Authority (PHA) Mutual Self–Help Housing Program is set for tomorrow on West 11th St. in Port Angeles.
The so-called “sweat equity” program helps working families achieve their goal of homeownership, without having to come up with a down payment, by working together to help build the homes. All ten families agree to work for a minimum of 32 hours per week for one year to help build all ten homes. And, in keeping with the theme of building a neighborhood, no one will move in until all the homes are completed.
To date the PHA has assisted in the construction of over 100 homes in Clallam and Jefferson Counties. USDA grant funds pay for the administration of the program and provide no-down-payment, low interest loans to the homeowners for their lot and construction costs.
