Observant KONP listener prompts Coast Guard to fix Ediz Hook light tower

BY PEPPER FISHER

Port Angeles – Have you noticed that the light tower at the Coast Guard base on Ediz Hook in Port Angeles has not been working for weeks?

One of our listeners did, asked us to look into it, and now the Coast Guard tells us they’re on the case.

On Wednesday, Dustan Lloyd, a barber living in Port Angeles, wrote us the following email: “Can you please do a story on why the lighthouse isn’t working? It hasn’t been going for a few weeks, and I don’t know why, and no one has said anything. Thanks”

We thought he meant the Dungeness Lighthouse, but that didn’t seem right, so we got back to him and confirmed that he was talking about the Coast Guard light tower.

We called the Coast Guard’s Public Information Officer, Daryl Peloquin, headquartered in Seattle, to see what he could tell us. He knew nothing about it, but said when a working beacon designed to signal vessels stops working, that would usually be pretty important.

Peloquin promised to look into it and get back to us. By Wednesday afternoon, he left us this voicemail.

“And we did confirm with the air station out there that does appear to be extinguished. We put a notice out to the public, which we do via a broadcast notice to mariners, and we’ll get a technician out there as soon as we can to troubleshoot it and hopefully fix it. That’s all I know at this point.”

A return call for more information was not answered, so that’s where we stand on the matter, for now.

Thanks Dustan, for proving that news tips get results.
