OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Spring has officially arrived at Olympic National Park, and with it comes the return of some of the park’s hardest-working residents—the mule pack string. After spending the winter at pasture, the beloved mules made their journey back to the park Tuesday, marking what staff are calling April MULES Day.
ONP says the surefooted animals play a vital role in maintaining the park’s backcountry trails, carrying supplies to remote locations that are otherwise inaccessible by vehicle. Their return is a welcome sight for the park’s mule packers and trail crew, who not only work alongside them but also know each mule’s name, personality, and quirks.
ONP officials say they owe a special thank-you to Washington’s National Park Fund for supporting the mule program, helping to ensure these four-legged helpers receive top-notch care.
