SEQUIM — If you’re driving through Sequim this weekend and notice American flags lining the streets, it’s not for a typical holiday. The Sequim Sunrise Rotary is placing flags in honor of Medal of Honor Day, observed each year on March 25.

Normally, the Rotary’s Flag Display Project sets out hundreds of flags on five major holidays—including Presidents Day. But this year, snow and rough weather in February kept volunteers from putting them out. Instead, they’re flying this weekend, March 22–23, to mark a day honoring the more than 3,500 service members awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military distinction.

Locally, the Olympic Peninsula has Four Medal of Honor recipients—Richard B. Anderson, Marvin G. Shields, Francis Bishop, and Thaddeus S. Smith.

The Rotary’s Flag Display Project is a key fundraiser supporting local and international service projects, including scholarships. The club places about 650 flags around town on designated holidays
