PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls’ tennis team kicked off their season with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over North Mason. Head coach Stephanie Gochnour watched her team battle through a competitive opening match, securing the win with strong performances in both singles and doubles play.
On the singles side, Bridget Weed faced a tough opponent and fell 1-6, 2-6, but Emma Murray responded with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win. Pyper Alton made quick work of her match, rolling to a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory.
In doubles action, Cayleigh Alward and Abby Riffle put up a fight but lost in a close match, 6-7 (2-7), 3-6. Rylie Medley and Alyssom Larsen also came up short, falling 3-6, 1-6. However, the Roughriders sealed the team win with two clutch doubles victories—Hannah Hairell and Allison Fricker delivered a strong 6-1, 6-2 performance, while Jule Getzin and Lizzy Clark secured the final win with a 6-2, 6-3 result.
The Roughriders now set their sights on Bainbridge, where they’ll compete this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Sequim will travel to North Mason for their matchup at the same time.
Golf Dominance for Port Angeles
The Port Angeles girls’ golf team continued their impressive season with a convincing 219-264 win over Bremerton. Autumn Wilson Rowland led the way, earning match medalist honors with a score of 52. This marks the third time this season the Roughriders have had a different golfer claim the top spot. Claire Osterberg and Mia Neff both shot 55s, while Malena Marquez followed closely with a 57. Izzy Spencer recorded a 65, and Brenna Furnice rounded out the team’s performance with a 69.

The boys’ team was equally dominant, outshooting Bremerton 155-260. Austin Worthington was the day’s top golfer, carding a 38. Just behind him, Sky Gelder, Tate Alton, and Max Gagnon all shot 39s, while Cale Wentz finished with a 40 and Kolby Charles added a 42.
Next up, the Roughriders will travel to Bremerton, while Sequim hosts North Kitsap. Tee times are set for 3:00 p.m.
Soccer: Roughriders Shut Out North Mason
The Port Angeles boys’ soccer team is off to a red-hot start, picking up a 3-0 win over North Mason to continue their early-season momentum.
Matthew Miller wasted no time getting the Roughriders on the board, finding the net in the sixth minute. Just over 20 minutes later, Oliver Martinez doubled the lead with a strike in the 27th minute. Miller added his second goal of the night just two minutes later, making it 3-0 before halftime.
On the defensive end, goalkeeper Gus Halberg was rock-solid, earning his second shutout of the season.
Baseball and Softball Action
The Sequim baseball team delivered a dominant 6-0 win over Kingston, while North Mason edged out Port Angeles 5-2.
On the softball diamond, Sequim is set to take on Kingston today, with the first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
Local track and field athletes will be in action today, as Sequim hosts a three-team meet featuring Port Angeles and Kingston. Events begin at 3:00 p.m.

Ervin played a crucial role in his team’s 83-72 victory, logging 21 minutes while dishing out five assists, grabbing two rebounds, and adding two points to the scoreboard. With the win, the Mountaineers now face a major challenge: a matchup against No. 1 seed Duke on Friday morning at 11:50 a.m. in Raleigh, North Carolina. The game will be nationally televised on CBS.
