Sequim – The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce announced Thursday the finalists for the 2024 Citizen of the Year Award.

Chosen by a committee of former winners of the award during a meeting on February 10, the three finalists chosen are said to  exemplify a different kind of volunteerism and community support. All three have generously given their hours and energy for the benefit of our region.

Nominated by Lori Coleman and Fire Chief Justin Grider is finalist Blaine Zechenelly, local volunteer and head of the local Community Emergency Response Team program. In his letter of support for Zechenelly, Chief Grider said Zechenelly’s, leadership has been instrumental in developing the Map Your Neighborhood program and Clallam Ready initiative, fostering a culture of preparedness and resilience.

Finalist Ron Stecker has served as a volunteer photographer in the local community for many years. Nominated by Dan and Janet Abbott, he has photographed for many well-known events, including Lavender Festival Weekend, the Air Affaire, and the Revolutionary war re-enactment.

Finalist Nicole Lepping was nominated by John Gagen. Lepping was the founder and first board president for the Sequim Wheelers, which has grown from a handful of volunteers with a single bicycle to its current 5 bike fleet and nearly 100 volunteers.

On February 25 the Citizen of the Year luncheon will take place to announce the winner. The Sequim Gazette is the Sunshine Sponsor of the event.
