POULSBO — In high school basketball action last night, the Port Angeles girls defeated North Kitsap in a low-scoring, grind-it-out contest where points were hard to come by—except for Roughrider senior Lexie Smith, who scored half of her team’s points with 17, as the Roughriders edged the Vikings 33-28.

The Roughriders are now in a three-way tie with North Kitsap and North Mason for second place, all with 8-3 records. However, Port Angeles holds the tiebreaker over the Vikings, having beaten them in both matchups. North Mason still has to play Bainbridge. The Roughriders will be heavy favorites in their final three games, hosting Bremerton while traveling to Sequim and Kingston.

In boys’ basketball, as expected, Sequim dominated Olympic 69-45, with Jericho Julmist leading the way with 32 points and Solomon Sheppard adding 14.

Bremerton also cruised past Bainbridge last night, winning 75-42. With that result, the Wolves (9-2) now trail Bremerton (10-1) by one game and lead Bainbridge (8-3) by one game.

Sequim has a big matchup at North Kitsap on Tuesday night, and that game will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio.

The Port Angeles boys improved to 3-8 in league play and 8-10 overall after a come-from-behind win over North Kitsap (4-7, 7-10).

Gus Halberg led the way with 20 points, while Brock Hope added 15 points and recorded four blocked shots. Blake Sohlberg chipped in with 9 points, Keatyn Hoch had 8, Matthew Miller scored 7, and Alex Angevine contributed 2.

Roughrider Gus Halberg scored 20 points, and Brock Hope added 15 as the Roughriders defeated North Kitsap 61-54.

The Roughriders will travel to Sequim on Friday night.

In NWAC basketball action tonight, the Peninsula College Pirates travel to Shoreline. The Pirate women tip off at 5:00 p.m., followed by the men at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio, with the Les Schwab Tires Pre-Game Show starting at 4:45 p.m.

Peninsula Pirate Jelissa Julmist, the former Sequim Wolf, has been an inspiration, playing at times through a painful foot injury. The Pirates are heavy favorites tonight at Shoreline.

A very familiar name is now the Athletic Director at Shoreline Community College—former UCLA guard Cameron Dollar took over the role last spring. Dollar won a national championship with the Bruins in 1995, defeating Arkansas at the Kingdome in Seattle.

Dollar also served as an assistant coach at Washington from 2002-2009 during the Lorenzo Romar glory years. A live interview with Dollar may take place tonight at halftime of one of the two Pirate games.
