NEAH BAY — For the second year in a row, the little 1B school from Neah Bay almost defeated the big 2A school from Port Angeles. The Roughriders pulled out a 53-44 win despite blowing another big lead—something that has happened in several games this season. Thanks to Blake Sohlberg’s late three-point shot and Matthew Miller playing the best game of his career, the Roughriders managed to hold on for the victory.

The Red Devils started slow, having played a tough game at Tulalip on Saturday night and without leading scorer Tyler Swan, who pulled a hamstring in that game.

The Roughriders dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Red Devils 22-9 to take a 34-19 halftime lead. By the end of the third quarter, they extended their advantage to 44-28.

Then, as in four of their losses this year, the Roughriders allowed their opponent to rally. The Red Devils went on a 12-1 run to open the fourth quarter, pulling within one point. The raucous Red Devil crowd erupted, but Roughrider senior Blake Sohlberg silenced them with a clutch three-point shot from the left wing, giving Port Angeles a four-point lead.

The Red Devils faded in the final two minutes, and the Roughriders secured the win. Matthew Miller was outstanding and, along with Gus Halberg, led the Roughriders with 13 points each. Blake Sohlberg contributed 9 points, and Keatyn Hoch added 6 points.

For Neah Bay, 5’6″ senior Makyah Chambers kept the Red Devils in the game with 18 points. Inside presence 6’2″ senior Seactis Woodruff scored 10 points, and senior Jodell Wimberly added 8 points.

Basketball Showdown in Bremerton
All eyes in high school basketball will be on the 11-0, second-ranked Sequim Wolves tonight as they face the 6-3 Bremerton Knights. Basketball aficionados are well aware of talented Knights sophomore Jalen Davis, who is averaging 28 points per game.

However, Davis isn’t a one-man show—his teammates are just as impressive. Freshman Frank Allen (6’6”) averages 13 points per game, sophomore Jac’Quan McWhorter (6’1”) adds 10 points per game, and sophomore football star Enoch Taylor (6’1”) chips in 12 points per game.

The Knights are averaging 77 points per game while allowing just 40 points. Despite their talent, they aren’t invincible. The Knights suffered a two-point loss at Bainbridge and dropped both games at the Yakima Sundome Classic to 2A powerhouse Grandview and 4A contender West Valley (Yakima).

A packed gym is expected tonight, and you can hear the game live on KONP Newsradio, with the Les Schwab Tires Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45. Oly Archibald and Joe Gladfelter will provide the play-by-play.
