PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Fire Department is introducing an annual fire inspection program for local businesses, starting in 2025. The program aims to prevent fires, protect lives and property, and ensure compliance with fire safety standards, according to a press release from the department.

With the approval of the City Council, the department has hired a full-time Fire Inspector to conduct the inspections. A newly-adopted fee schedule will support the program’s operations and sustainability.

The inspections will include evaluating fire exits, fire extinguishers, suppression systems, electrical systems, flammable materials storage, smoke alarms, and sprinkler systems. Fire Marshal Mike Sanders explained that these checks will help identify and address potential hazards to reduce risks and ensure businesses are prepared for emergencies.

The Fire Department will contact businesses to schedule inspections. Business owners are encouraged to prepare by reviewing their premises for potential fire hazards and ensuring all safety equipment is functional. A self-inspection checklist, developed by the department, is available on its website to assist with preparations.
