BELLINGHAM — The third-ranked Peninsula Pirates women’s basketball team opened Northern Conference play with a dominant display of depth, speed, and size, routing Whatcom 85-34. The Pirates surged to a 23-8 first-quarter lead and extended it to 45-16 by halftime.
Ten of the Pirates’ 11 players scored in the game. Alecsis Smith led the way with 16 points, four rebounds, and two blocks in just 12 minutes, showcasing her dominance in the post. Point guard Shania Moanunu added 15 points, while her Hawaii teammate Ciera Agasiva contributed 13.

Lexie Mackey continued her MVP-caliber season with 11 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Freshman Carliese O’Brien made a strong impact off the bench with nine points, 10 rebounds, and three assists. Makena Patrick chipped in seven points and eight rebounds, Bobby “Skyee” Ragsdale scored seven, and Ryana Moss hit a three-pointer. Kadie Wood and Veniza Jackson rounded out the scoring with two points each.
The 9-2 Pirates return home for a 2 p.m. tipoff Saturday against Bellevue.

The Peninsula Pirate men, missing three starters, fought hard but fell to the Orcas 85-76. Trailing just 37-36 at halftime, the Pirates couldn’t overcome the size and athleticism of Whatcom, which outrebounded them 50-31.
Sophomore guard Antonio Odum led the Pirates with 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Jaiden Blackmon added 14 points and nine rebounds, Isaiah Lopez scored 13 points, and former Roughrider Isaiah Shamp contributed 10. The Pirates, now 6-8, will host Bellevue on Saturday at 4 p.m.
