LOCAL SPORTS: Sequim boys improve to 9-0

SEQUIM — The Sequim Wolves boys basketball team improved to 9-0 after a commanding 75-40 victory over Fife. Jericho Julmist led the Wolves with 20 points, while Charlie Grider added 17 and Ethan Melnick contributed 13.

The Wolves will travel to Port Angeles on Tuesday night to face the 4-5 Roughriders. Port Angeles has won five of the last six matchups between the two schools.

The Roughrider girls fell to a strong Central Kitsap Cougars team, 54-40 Friday in Silverdale. The Cougars, a 3A team with an 8-4 record, led 28-12 at halftime and by as many as 24 points in the second half. The Roughriders closed the gap midway through the fourth quarter as the Cougars rotated their bench.

Lindsay Smith paced the Roughriders with 19 points, and Teanna Clark added 10. Central Kitsap’s highly recruited 6’1″ senior Alyssa Neuman scored 23 points, while the Roughriders struggled to contain the quick Cougar freshman guards.

The 4-5 Roughrider girls will host the 2-5 Sequim Wolves on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. Both teams are in dire need of a league win.

In college basketball, former Port Angeles Roughrider and Peninsula Pirate Millie Long helped lead the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves to a 68-61 win over Central Washington in Ellensburg. Long, who has started 14 of the Seawolves’ 15 games, tallied 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, and three steals.

This season, Long is averaging 13 points per game, shooting 46% from the field and 76% from the free-throw line. The Seawolves boast a 13-2 overall record and are 4-0 in GNAC play. They will face Seattle Pacific on January 23.

Former Roughrider and Peninsula Pirate Millie Long is having an outstanding season with the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. Long is averaging 13 points per game.

In local bowling action, Port Angeles will host Bremerton today at 2:45 p.m.

Meanwhile, in NWAC basketball, the Peninsula Pirates open Northern Conference play on Wednesday in Bellingham against Whatcom. The 3rd-ranked women’s team tips off at 5:00 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:00 p.m. Both games can be heard live on KONP Newsradio.

Former Roughrider graduate and current Peninsula Pirate Head Coach Allison Crumb has her Pirates ranked 3rd in the NWAC and as heavy favorites to win the Northern Conference again
