PORT TOWNSEND — Records can be deceiving, and that was certainly the case in Port Townsend yesterday, as East Jefferson, now 2-5, defeated the 2-5 Sequim Wolves by 20 points, 56-36.

The Rivals of East Jefferson quickly jumped out to a 21-8 first-quarter lead and held a 22-15 advantage at halftime.

The Wolves pulled within 11 points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Rivals pulled away, leading by as many as 24 points.

Sequim sophomore Gracie Chartraw delivered a hard-fought performance, scoring 24 points along with six rebounds, five steals, and three assists. The Wolves’ next highest scorer was Kiley Winter with five points.

For the Rivals, senior point guard Kay Botkin shone, scoring 20 points and making several no-look, laser passes that led to easy layups. Sophomore Kadence Plotner added 14 points, junior Dylin Shockley scored 10, and junior Penina Vailolo contributed eight points.

The Wolves now face a tough challenge as they head to Port Angeles on Tuesday night as heavy underdogs.

In other local basketball action, the Sequim boys (8-0) are strong home favorites tonight against the 2-6 Fife Trojans.

Wolves Solomon Sheppard and Mason Rapelje will be out to run and gun with Fife tonight at Rick Kaps Gym. Sheppard had 5 first half dunks against Australia Monday night.

Meanwhile, the Port Angeles Roughrider girls basketball team travels to Silverdale for a tough matchup against Class 3A Central Kitsap. The Cougars (7-3) have blowout wins over Olympic and North Kitsap and are led by 6’1″ senior Alyssa Neuman, who averages 16 points per game. Neuman scored 24 points against Olympic and is the only senior on an otherwise young team.

Central Kitsap has topped the 70-point mark twice this season, averaging 56 points per game, while the Roughriders average 42 points and allow just 36. The Roughriders went 2-1 at the Meridian Holiday Tournament, with Lindsay Smith and Teanna Clark each averaging 13 points per game, and Lexie Smith adding eight per game.

Roughrider senior Teanna Clark, who scored 27 points against Sultan, will need a strong performance against Central Kitsap tonight for a potential Roughrider upset.

Tonight’s game will be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio, with the Les Schwab Tires Pre-Game Show starting at 5:00 p.m. and tip-off set for 5:15. Oly Archibald and Bill Bates will provide play-by-play coverage.
