PORT TOWNSEND — The Sequim Wolves girls basketball team opens 2025 with a short road trip to Port Townsend today for a non-league matchup against East Jefferson.

East Jefferson has had a tough start to the season, sitting at 1-5. They are led by 5’11” junior Penina Vailolo, who averages 15 points per game (ppg) and 7 rebounds per game (rpg). Point guard Kay Botkin, a 5’6″ senior, contributes 7 ppg and 3 rpg. Botkin has signed with Park University in Gilbert, Arizona. Her mother, Cameron Botkin, played at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego and previously coached at Forks and Port Townsend.

The Wolves will have to defend East Jefferson point guard Kay Botkin heading to Park University in Gilbert Arizona.

East Jefferson averages 36 ppg while allowing 49 ppg. The Wolves, currently 2-4, are coming off a heartbreaking 54-52 loss to Bellarine of Australia. Sequim is averaging 46 ppg and giving up 43 ppg.

In the loss to Bellarine, Gracie Chartraw led the Wolves with 23 points, while Taylor Heyting added 9 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Point guard Manuela Valle Jover, a 5’2″ junior exchange student from Spain, is a strong three-point shooter and will help alleviate pressure on Chartraw by bringing the ball up the court.

Today’s game will be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio, with tip-off at 3:30 p.m. The Les Schwab Tires Pre-Game Show starts at 3:15 p.m. Oly Archibald and Bill Bates will provide play-by-play coverage.

In boys’ action tomorrow, Sequim will host Fife at 5:00 p.m. Also tomorrow, the Roughrider girls will tip off against Central Kitsap at 5:15 p.m. That game will also be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio, with a preview of the matchup airing earlier in the day.
