PORT ANGELES — Clallam County is starting the new year with a new coroner. Judge David Neupert steps into the role Wednesday, replacing Mark Nichols, who resigned due to a state law change barring prosecutors from serving as coroners.
The shift follows an attorney general’s opinion highlighting potential conflicts of interest. Clallam County, a charter county, faced unique challenges since its charter automatically assigns the prosecutor as coroner. After consulting legal experts, the county decided to appoint Neupert, a District Court judge based in Port Angeles, as interim coroner.
Neupert will serve until the county amends its charter and determines whether the coroner position will be appointed or elected. Discussions on the charter’s future are expected in 2025. Meanwhile, Neupert will be compensated for his additional duties, with the amount set at no less than $8,900.
