SEQUIM — The Sequim Wolves boys’ basketball team is the talk of the Olympic Peninsula. The Wolves hold sole possession of first place in the Olympic League with a 3-0 league record and an overall record of 5-0.
The Wolves travel to Silverdale tomorrow night for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff against 5-1 Olympic.
The Trojans were 5-0 when they hosted Port Angeles last week, but the Roughriders blew them out of Kitsap County with a decisive 75-40 win. The Trojans had a favorable early schedule; their first six opponents have a combined 10-26 record. However, Olympic did manage wins over Bainbridge and North Kitsap — teams that ironically defeated Port Angeles.
The Wolves have been a red-hot shooting team, averaging 71 points per game (ppg) while allowing just 47 ppg. In comparison, the Trojans average 58 ppg and give up 50 ppg.
Sequim’s sharpshooters Jericho Julmist and Solomon Sheppard have been on fire — hotter than a Taylor Swift concert ticket! Both players are averaging 20 ppg. Julmist leads the team with 8 rebounds per game and is shooting 75% from the free-throw line and 47% from the field.
Sheppard is also making a big impact, averaging 5 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 65% from the field, including a scorching 53% from beyond the arc.
Sophomore Mason Rapelje is having a solid season as well, averaging 9 ppg, 4 rebounds per game, and shooting 83% from the free-throw line.
Sequim Wolves senior Ethan Melnick is another Wolf who has been outstanding, averaging 5 points per game, 6 rebounds per game, and shooting 75% from the free-throw line.
Tomorrow night’s game will be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio.
In girls’ basketball, the Port Angeles Roughriders earned a convincing 53-28 win over North Kitsap. Despite their season-long scoring struggles — averaging just 34 ppg — the Roughriders dominated the second half, outscoring the Vikings 28-10. They also forced 24 turnovers while committing only 14 themselves.
Roughriders Lexie Smith, Teanna Clark, and Lindsay Smith attended last year’s Gonzaga basketball camp. The three Roughriders combined to score 46 points in their 53-28 win over North Kitsap.
The Roughriders are off until December 26, when they travel to Meridian to take on Bellevue Christian, a 1A state powerhouse. The Vikings went 21-3 last season and reached Friday of the State Tournament in Yakima. They are currently 5-0 with impressive wins over 3A contender White River (59-51) and 4A Skyline (43-42).
The next Roughriders broadcast on KONP Newsradio will be January 3 at Central Kitsap.
