LOCAL SPORTS: Sequim hoops boys stay hot; Peninsula College gets wins

SEQUIM — It was a very busy weekend of basketball, and once again, the Sequim boys basketball team is making headlines, blowing out a strong Bainbridge team 69-46.

Sequim (5-0) scored 22 points off 25 Bainbridge turnovers. The Wolves played a nearly perfect game, committing just 11 turnovers.

Sophomore Jericho Julmist excelled on both ends of the court, scoring 23 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Just as importantly, Julmist held Spartan senior guard Luke Johnson to just seven points; Johnson had scored 28 against Port Angeles earlier in the season.

The Wolves were red hot at the free throw line, sinking 18 of 22 attempts. Solomon Sheppard added 15 points, while sophomore guard Mason Rapelje was outstanding with 15 points and six rebounds. The Wolves travel to 5-1 Olympic tomorrow night.

Port Angeles dominated Olympic 75-40. The Roughriders have a big game tomorrow night at North Kitsap, which will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio with a 7 p.m. tip-off.

In girls basketball, Bainbridge had no trouble with Sequim, defeating the Wolves 66-25. Sequim will host Olympic tomorrow night at 7 p.m.

The Port Angeles girls’ game at Olympic was shortened due to a leaking gym roof. The final four minutes will be completed when Olympic visits Port Angeles, with the Roughriders leading by 10. Port Angeles (1-3) has a major home game tomorrow night against 5-1 North Kitsap at 7 p.m.

NWAC Basketball Action
The Peninsula Pirate men went 2-1 in their Pirate Classic tournament. They defeated Big Bend 63-58 and Pierce 56-55, while falling to Lane 87-63. Pirate guard Isaiah Lopez averaged 21 points per game, and DeShawn Rushmeyer added 10 points per game over the three-game tournament. The Pirates, now 6-5 after a 1-4 start, will host South Puget Sound on January 3 at 4 p.m.

The fourth-ranked Pirate women (8-2) went undefeated at the Clark Crossover Tournament in Vancouver, winning all three games. They defeated Centralia 77-59, earned an impressive 69-61 victory over a strong Clark team on its home court, and beat Spokane 70-50.

Sophomore Lexie Mackey, who is having a stellar season, averaged 13 points per game in the tournament. Sophomore guard Ciera Agasiva averaged 12 points per game, while freshman Alexis Smith averaged 17 points and eight rebounds in two games. Smith and Jelissa Julmist missed some time due to minor ankle injuries. The Pirates are off until league play begins January 8 at Whatcom, a game that will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio.

Swimming Action
The Port Angeles boys swimming team defeated Kingston 116-66. The Roughriders took first place in the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay, and 400 Freestyle Relay.

Individual winners included Thomas Jones (200 Freestyle), Miles Van Denburg (200 Individual Medley, 500 Freestyle), Finn Thompson (50 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle), Patrick Ross (100 Butterfly), Isaac Meek (100 Backstroke), and Jack Root (Diving).

Bowling Match Today
Sequim and Port Angeles will face off in bowling today at Laurel Lanes with a 3 p.m. start.
