Port Angeles – One of the things the Clallam County Sheriff’s Emergency Management Division does is to keep current their Hazard Mitigation Plan. It’s a federally approved plan that examines the potential hazards in our area and identifies ways to prepare and mitigate the danger to the community. Having this plan in place makes us eligible for grants to address these problems.
The Hazard Mitigation Plan is updated every five years, and that time is now. This year, the Emergency Management Division is working with all our county’s cities, multiple tribes, Clallam PUD, Peninsula College, the Port of Port Angeles and other agencies to prepare a robust and effective plan for the future. The public’s input in this process is vital.
With that in mind, they conducted a community survey and received over 650 responses. A draft of the Hazard Mitigation Plan is now ready for public review and comment. Go to clallamcountywa.gov and click on the link right there on the landing page.
You can provide comments until December 31.
Hazard mitigation planning allows the County to receive FEMA funding in the event of a disaster, and lays a plan down on paper as to what should be done in the event of an emergency.
