PORT ANGELES — The Port of Port Angeles and the Makah Tribe will receive  federal funding for infrastructure improvements, with grants of $9 million and $5.5 million, respectively.

The funding comes from the Port Infrastructure Development Program. The $44.5 million in total funding for Washington state ports was announced Wednesday.

The Port of Port Angeles will use its grant to purchase energy-efficient equipment, including log stackers and a bulk cargo conveyor, to improve efficiency in its forest products operations. Port officials say that supports over 1,500 jobs on the Olympic Peninsula.

Neah Bay’s Makah Tribe will use its funds to modernize port facilities by building a multiuse barge loading area, increasing shipping capacity and resilience, especially important given weather disruptions on State Route 112.
