PORT ANGELES — Ahead of tomorrow’s district football game, Sequim senior lineman Dylan Bowen says this season has been particularly memorable. “There’s a lot of excitement, especially at school,” he said. “Students are always asking when the next game is, who we’re playing, and what our chances are. It hasn’t always been like this.”

The Wolves face a tough opponent tomorrow at Tiger Stadium in Centralia, taking on the AP’s 7th-ranked WF West Bearcats, who are 8-1. To stand a chance, the Wolves will need to play as well as they did in the first half against Olympic, maintaining a sharp read-option game with junior QB Zeke Schmadeke and tailback Liam Wiker.

Schmadeke, a standout in the Olympic League, has rushed 175 times for 983 yards and 10 touchdowns. Wiker has added 630 yards and eight touchdowns on 128 carries. Sequim’s short-field passing game, designed to keep defenses honest, has also been effective, with Schmadeke completing 50 of 78 passes for 436 yards and four touchdowns.

Sequim Senior lineman Brayden White has had a great season on both sides of the ball for the Wolves

However, the Wolves will be without junior receiver Malachi Hampton, who leads the team with 15 receptions for 160 yards and four touchdowns but has been sidelined since the North Kitsap game with a shoulder injury. Wiker has contributed in the passing game as well, catching 14 passes for 87 yards.

Defensively, the Wolves will have to contain WF West’s quick receivers and their tailback, senior Beau Guyette. Schmadeke leads Sequim’s defense with 69 tackles and is expected to be a 1st Team All-League safety. Senior defensive back Simon Scribner has 55 tackles, and sophomore linebacker Aron Golbeck is third on the team with 46. Hampton and Solomon Sheppard have two interceptions each.

Sequim Wolves senior defensive back Simon Scribner is the team’s second-leading tackler.

In other sports, the Port Angeles Roughriders soccer team fell 1-0 to Steilacoom, ending their season at 9-9. With only two seniors graduating, the Roughriders are expected to contend for a league championship next year.

The Roughriders and Sequim Wolves swim teams will compete at the district meet today at the Mount Tahoma Aquatic Center in Auburn, with 10 Roughrider swimmers qualified.

Roughrider junior Lynzee Reid placed first in diving at the Olympic League meet and will lead a strong team of 10 to the district competition.

Tomorrow, Peninsula College hosts an NWAC soccer quarterfinal doubleheader. The Pirate women face Tacoma at noon, followed by the Pirate men’s match at 2:30 p.m., also against Tacoma.
