Clallam County Auditor on ballot drop box security

BY PEPPER FISHER

Port Angeles – After learning that some counties in Washington have made the move to pick up ballots from their drop boxes more frequently in response to the incident in Vancouver, we reached out to Clallam County Auditor Shoona Riggs to find if her office was making any changes in how they do things going into Election Day. Here’s what she told us via email.

“We have been working closely with our local law enforcement; they have had multiple interagency conversations regarding ensuring security of the drop boxes. Our office had made a few security adjustments and will also soon begin picking up ballots more frequently.

As always, we remind our workers to be alert and safe. If they have any concerns when arriving at a drop box, our direction is to escalate it to emergency levels by calling 911 if needed.

This has been discussed with our Deputies and all our partnering law enforcement agencies, and directly in conversations with each one of the Chiefs.”

Also…The Clallam County Elections Division will perform a random audit of the General Election at 9:30 AM on November 6, 2024. The testing will take place in the Elections Center in the Clallam County Courthouse.

The test demonstrates the accuracy of the tabulation equipment by comparing a manual count of ballots to the machine count for randomly selected batches.

The audit is open to the public, with limited in-person observation space available. They will also be livestreaming the testing for anyone who would like to observe virtually. To do that, visit the Clallam County Elections website at clallamcountywa.gov/elections.
