PORT ANGELES — Both Peninsula Pirates soccer teams won their games at Whatcom, clinching the Northern Conference Championships.

The men, down 2-1 at halftime, came from behind to win 3-2. Nil Grau scored all three goals unassisted for the Pirates. The Pirates, now 12-0-1, will play next Saturday at Shoreline.

The Pirate women beat Whatcom 7-1. Shawna Larson scored four goals, Paige Johnson added two, and Ellianna Barden scored one. The Pirates are now 11-0.

In high school football, there are just two weeks left in the regular season. With four teams guaranteed district playoff spots, the Sequim Wolves are in good shape. On Saturday, the Wolves were competitive in their 28-7 loss to a much bigger and more athletic Olympic team.

The Sequim offense, with the running of Zeke Schmadeke, Jericho Julmist, and Aron Golbeck, and an occasional pass completion, did a great job controlling the ball and running the clock, keeping the Olympic offense on the sidelines. Unfortunately, the Wolves had two turnovers in the red zone in the first half, and Olympic tailback Chance Webster scored on an 81-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Olympic lead at halftime.

The Trojans’ offensive line, which averages a very athletic 280 lbs., wore out the Wolves’ defense in the fourth quarter. The Wolves are in the final fourth playoff spot, a game ahead of 1-3 Bremerton and 1-3 North Mason. North Mason lost to Bremerton 35-14 Friday night. The Wolves have already beaten Bremerton 7-6.

The Wolves’ Oct. 31 game at North Mason could clinch the fourth playoff spot with a win over the Bulldogs.

The Port Angeles Roughriders travel to Bremerton Friday night, still looking for their first win of the year. The young Knights have improved throughout the season, losing by just two touchdowns to Olympic two weeks ago before defeating North Mason Friday night.

KONP sports radio commentator Greg Thomas interviewed 7th graders Emily Bair and Arwen Osbourne of the Sequim Wolf Pups Championship Cross Country team at halftime of the Sequim football game on Saturday.

Former Port Angeles and Peninsula College star Millie Long has transferred to D2 powerhouse, the University of Alaska Anchorage. The Seawolves are in the same conference as her former school, Humboldt State (Cal Poly).

Long gave up soccer to play basketball exclusively for the Seawolves. Last year at Humboldt State, Long was named Newcomer of the Year in both basketball and soccer, a first in school history.

Former Roughrider and Pirate Millie Long is now an Alaska Anchorage Seawolf.

In basketball, Long averaged 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. Local fans will have a few chances to watch Long play: UAA faces Central Washington on Jan. 4, Seattle Pacific on Jan. 23, Western Washington on Feb. 13, and Saint Martin’s on March 1.
