LOCAL SPORTS: PC soccer men tie, women win again; middle school cross country championship held

EVERETT — In NWAC soccer action in Everett, the nation’s 3rd-ranked Peninsula Pirates men’s team held a 3-1 lead in the 54th minute after a goal by Austin Collins. However, Everett scored two goals in the next seven minutes, and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Nil Grau and Ezrah Ochoa scored the other two goals. The Pirates are now 11-0-1 on the season.

The nation’s top-ranked Pirates women shut out Everett 3-0, with goals from Paige Johnson, Shawna Larson, and Shiori Shintaku. The Pirates are now 9-0 and will travel to Whatcom on Saturday.

The middle school cross country championships were held at Lincoln Park, and to no one’s surprise, Sequim’s 7th grader Elenor Jones had the fastest time of all runners, including the boys. As he has all season, Jay Leiberman of Stevens led the boys with a time of 12:47, followed by Levi Simoneau of Stevens in second with a time of 13:05, and Nolan Keck in third with a time of 13:08.

For the girls,  Jones clocked a blistering time of 12:22. Matilda Woodbury of Sequim finished third with a time of 15:19. In the team standings, Sequim finished 1st, Blue Heron 2nd, and Forks 3rd for the girls, while Stevens took 1st, Blue Heron 2nd, and Sequim 3rd for the boys.

Speaking of Elenor Jones, she and her Sequim teammate Emily Bair will be interviewed live Friday night on the Wolves VIP Halftime Show when Sequim takes on Olympic on KONP.

In volleyball action tonight, North Kitsap is at Port Angeles, and Sequim is at Bremerton. Both matches start at 6:30.

In soccer action, Olympic is at Sequim with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff, and North Kitsap is at Port Angeles with a 7:15 p.m. start.

The Roughriders will need a big performance at home from senior Ava Anne Sheahan to beat 8th-ranked North Kitsap tonight

In tennis, Port Angeles is at Kingston, and Sequim is at Bremerton.
