PORT ANGELES – A fire in a duplex claimed the life of one person and injured another.
The Port Angeles Fire Department responded about 8:30 Saturday night in the 100 block of South Washington. Initial reports indicated two occupants were unaccounted for. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the building, with one resident already outside.
Crews launched search-and-rescue efforts while fighting the fire. They found the second occupant inside the home but pronounced the 59-year-old resident dead at the scene. The surviving resident, a 62-year-old, was treated for burn injuries and transported to Olympic Medical Center. PA Fire Department officials did not release the gender or names of the victims pending notification of next of kin.
Officials say the fire was confined to one unit and quickly extinguished..
The cause of the fire is under investigation, with damage assessments pending.
