LOCAL SPORTS: Sequim soccer boots past Bremerton; tennis results and a football preview

BREMERTON — In soccer action last night, the Sequim Wolves improved their league record to 3-4 with a convincing 6-0 win at Bremerton. Bella Rich and Ruby Morgan both scored two goals. Raimey Brewer and Kaiya Robinson each added a goal. Brewer also had two assists, while Kaiya Robinson, Laila Sundin, and Sasha Yada each contributed assists.

The Wolves have a big game at home against Kingston, who beat them in a penalty kick session after going scoreless in overtime.

Speaking of Kingston, they beat Port Angeles last night 2-0. The Roughriders are now 4-3 in league play and will be heavy favorites at North Mason on Tuesday.

In volleyball action, Kingston swept Port Angeles 3-0, and Sequim swept Bremerton 3-0.

In tennis, the Roughriders dismantled a tough Bainbridge team 6-1. In singles play, Tate Alton lost 6-2, 6-2, Sky Gelder won 6-3, 0-6, 6-5, and Garrett Buerer won 6-1, 7-5.

In doubles, Luke Flodstrom and Nathan Basden won 6-2, 6-2, Austin Worthington and Keatyn Hoch won 6-3, 6-2, Carter Gunderson and Grant Butterworth won 6-4, 6-0, and Zach Neff and Liam Miller won 7-5, 6-1. The Roughriders went 4-0 this week.

Today in swimming, Port Angeles travels to Olympic, while Sequim hosts Klahowya, both with 3:30 p.m. start times.

The Sequim Wolves football team faces a crucial “pretenders or contenders” game as the 3-1 Wolves travel to Bremerton to take on the 0-4 Knights. The Knights have played a tough schedule, with their opponents holding a combined 13-3 record. The Knights are averaging just under seven points per game while giving up 29. The Wolves are averaging 26 points per game while allowing 19, and their defense has given up only one touchdown in the last two games.

The Knights are led by tailback Kenny Najera, a 5’8″, 145 lb junior. Najera has rushed for 236 yards on 36 carries, averaging over six yards per carry with two touchdowns.

Sequim outside linebacker Simon Scribner will be keeping an eye on Bremerton tailback Kenney Najera.

Bremerton’s Memorial Stadium has been a nightmare for Sequim and Port Angeles in the last few years.
