PORT ANGELES — In high school tennis action, the Port Angeles Roughriders had a competitive match against Bremerton but ultimately prevailed 5-2. Tate Alton faced a rare loss, falling 6-1, 6-1, while Sky Gelder also came up short, losing 6-3, 6-3. Garrett Buerer secured a victory, winning 6-4, 7-5. In doubles action, Luke Flodstrom and Nathan Basden dominated their match, winning 6-0, 6-1. Austin Worthington and Keatyn Hoch triumphed with a 6-1, 6-0 win, and Carter Gunderson and Grant Butterworth took their match 6-1, 6-2. Zach Neff and Carston Siebel completed the doubles sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. The Roughriders are set to face a tough Bainbridge team on the road today.

At the Olympic League cross-country meet in Sequim, the Sequim girls finished in 2nd place, while Port Angeles came in 4th. Leia Larson led the Roughriders with a 3rd-place finish, clocking a time of 21:34. Mariam Cobb followed in 11th place with a time of 23:19, and Faerin Tait finished 18th, recording a time of 23:55. Sequim’s Dawn Hulstedt finished 5th with a time of 21:38, while her teammate Marea Denton posted a time of 23:48. Bridget Pyeatt rounded out Sequim’s top finishers, coming in 21st with a time of 24:08.

In the boys’ race, Port Angeles finished 6th, and Sequim took 7th. Andre Campbell placed 22nd for the Roughriders, while Sequim’s Adrian Osborne secured 18th place with a time of 18:51.

Meanwhile, at the middle school cross-country meet in Sequim, the Stevens boys swept the top three spots. Jay Lieberman finished first with a time of 9:38, followed by Nolan Keck at 9:42, and Levi Simoneau in third at 9:52. Stevens claimed 1st overall, with Sequim finishing 3rd. For the girls, Eleanor Jones of Sequim placed 1st with a time of 9:38. Amara Buggy took 2nd with a time of 11:07, and Emily Bair completed the sweep for Sequim with a time of 11:22.

In NWAC soccer, the nation’s 2nd-ranked Peninsula Pirates women, now 7-0, shut out Bellevue 4-0. Desiree Dutra led the charge with two goals, while Risa Nishida and Shiori Shintaku each added a goal. The 5th-ranked Peninsula Pirate men, who are 10-0, overcame an early deficit to defeat Bellevue 5-3. Konrad Mueller scored two goals, while Jeremiah Kuelo, Nil Grau, and Austin Collins each contributed a goal.

In high school swimming, Roughriders coach Sally Cole remarked, “I was sweating it out” as her team engaged in a tough contest with Bremerton. The Roughriders won 95-74 despite only securing victories in 3 of the 11 events. Lizzy Shaw won the 50 freestyle with a district-qualifying time, and Amayah Nelson took the 100 freestyle. The 200 freestyle relay team of Shaw, Danika Asgeirsson, Lynzee Reid, and Nelson also claimed first place.

In high school volleyball tonight, Port Angeles will face Kingston, and Sequim will take on Bremerton, with both matches starting at 6:30 p.m. In soccer, Port Angeles is set to play Kingston, while Sequim travels to Bremerton, with both games kicking off at 7:00 p.m.

On Friday night’s Wolves VIP Halftime show, Sequim Wolves soccer coach Haley Hunsaker will be interviewed along with Wolves seniors Libby Turella and Kalli Grove, and junior Raimey Brewer.

Former Sequim Wolves kicker Jack Henniger is now kicking for the University of Mary Marauders, a Division II school in Bismarck, North Dakota. Jack’s younger brother, Joe, a 6’0″, 165 lb junior, is the starting kicker for the Wolves this season.
