PORT ANGELES — In soccer action last night, the Port Angeles Roughriders lost a heartbreaker 1-0 to Class 1A state power Klahowya, which scored the winning goal with just three minutes left in the game. The Roughriders, a young team, played four freshmen at one time during the match.

The Roughriders will open Olympic League play tomorrow night at Peninsula College against North Mason, with kickoff set for 7:15 p.m.

The Sequim Wolves, led by new coach Haley Hunsaker, will also begin league play tomorrow night at Kingston, with kickoff at 7:00 p.m.

In volleyball action, Class 3A Sammamish defeated Port Angeles 3-1 at home in Bellevue. The Roughriders will start league play tomorrow night at home against North Mason, with the first serve at 6:30 p.m. The Sequim Wolves will open league play tomorrow night at Kingston, with the first serve at 6:30 p.m.

Both Port Angeles and Sequim swim teams will travel to Olympic High School tomorrow for a nine-team jamboree starting at 2:00 p.m.

The Peninsula Pirate soccer teams will open NWAC play tomorrow night at Skagit Valley College, with the women’s game kicking off at 5:15 p.m., followed by the men’s game.

For Roughrider fans, former Port Angeles standout Joel Thomas has left the New Orleans Saints after nine seasons and is now the running backs coach for the New York Giants.

Former Roughrider Jim Michalczik followed Johnathon Smith from Oregon State to Michigan State.
