PORT ANGELES — The clock is ticking for Port Angeles residents who want to participate in the City Shade Street Tree Planting Program. With the application deadline quickly approaching on September 6, 2024, now is the time to apply for up to four free street trees to be planted in public spaces near your home.

Developed by community member Paul Forrest in partnership with the City of Port Angeles, this program aims to enhance the city’s tree canopy and beautify residential neighborhoods. The trees, planted in the public right-of-way, will not only improve the appearance of the streets but also support environmental health.

Homeowners in low-, medium-, and high-density neighborhoods are eligible to apply, and city staff and volunteers will assist in selecting tree species best suited to each location’s size and soil conditions. If you prefer, you can also plant a tree purchased on your own as part of the program.

In addition to receiving trees, community members can volunteer to support the program by assisting with planting efforts, including the upcoming tree distribution event on October 19. However, to secure your spot, applications must be submitted by September 6.
