SEQUIM – Towne Road atop the new Dungeness River levee near Sequim is expected to be paved and ready for traffic in early September.
Clallam County Road Engineer Joe Donisi says they got the final clearance they needed from the Army Corps of Engineers on July 16 and are moving forward with construction.
“The levee’s been cut down to grade, and a concrete curb’s have been built, and the walking area has been raised up and built behind there. The contractor’s currently working on what we’re calling the causeway area, which connects the levy area over to the Sequim Dungeness area. And what we will be doing real soon, just as soon as we get the delivery of all the compost, we’ll start putting in our compost amended vegetated filter strips.”
The filter system as approved by the Army Corps and the Department of Ecology is designed to filter any runoff from the road in a way so as not to affect the floodplain on the opposite side of the levee.
When the work is complete and the road opened to traffic, the levee will have a two lane road and a foot trail open 24/7.
