SEQUIM — The QFC in Sequim is among the stores targeted for possible sale as part of the proposed $25 billion merger between Kroger and Albertsons. Nearly two years after announcing the merger, the companies have released a list of 579 stores, including nearly 70 in the Seattle area, to be sold off if the deal is approved.
The list, made public on Tuesday, includes 124 stores in Washington state owned by Kroger, which operates QFC and Fred Meyer, and Albertsons, which owns Safeway and Haggen. This represents nearly 40% of their combined stores in the state.
The divested locations are to be sold to New Hampshire-based C&S Wholesale Grocers. This move is intended to maintain competition in the numerous local markets where Kroger and Albertsons currently compete. However, there have been ongoing concerns that C&S might significantly change or even shut down some of these stores despite assurances from Kroger and Albertsons.
In addition to the QFC in Sequim, several other stores across Washington are set to be divested. The Port Angeles Safeway stores are not on the list .
Bellevue will see five QFC stores on the list, while Tacoma will lose two QFC stores and three Safeway stores. Kirkland is set to divest two Safeway stores and two QFC stores, and Redmond will lose three QFC stores and one Safeway store.
Notably, no Fred Meyer locations are slated for divestment.
