PORT ANGELES — The WIAA finally found a home for the Port Angeles Roughriders to face the WF West Bearcats in their first round of the Class 2A State Baseball Tournament. The Roughriders, 19-6 and ranked #10, will play at the historic Propstra Stadium, located on Mill Plain Blvd right off of I-5 in Vancouver. The Seattle Times featured Propstra Stadium as the best high school baseball park in the state.

The Roughriders will play the WF West Bearcats, who are 18-6 and ranked #7, at 2:00 PM. The first game will be between the #2 Seed Columbia River Rapids (18-6) and the #15 seed White River Hornets (14-10) at 10 AM. Winners will start 45 minutes after the 2:00 game for a trip to the Final 4 next weekend in Bellingham.

In girls’ fastpitch, Port Angeles defeated North Kitsap 2-1, with Natalie Robinson contributing a single and an RBI, and Kennedy Rognlien adding a double and an RBI. Heidi Leitz earned the win, pitching 7 innings with 7 strikeouts.

Recruiting is picking up at Peninsula College. In men’s soccer, the Pirates recruited Josh Kanyere from Luton, UK, and Ben Lokin from Amsterdam. In men’s basketball, they signed 6’6″ power forward Isaiah Elston from Rocklin, California. Elston, a team captain, helped lead the Thunder to a Sierra Foothill League Championship with a 28-4 overall record, averaging 8 ppg and 6 rpg in his senior year.

For the women’s team, the Pirates found another talent in high-scoring shooting guard Carliese O’Brien from Mount Edgecumbe High School in Sitka, Alaska. Mount Edgecumbe is a public boarding school with an enrollment of 400, drawing students from over 100 Native villages in Alaska. O’Brien contributed to the Braves’ 45-11 overall record and 20-1 conference play in her junior and senior seasons. She scored 29 points in a state tournament win over Homer and had 16 points and 13 rebounds in the state semifinal game. The Braves finished 2nd at the state tournament.
