Port Angeles – The City of Port Angeles is scheduled to begin the Downtown Tree & Sidewalk Replacement Project next Monday, April 1. The purpose of the project is to eliminate trip hazards while beautifying the downtown area.
This project will involve the replacement of outgrown trees that are lifting walkways, as well as the repair of tree wells, curb ramps, and portions of sidewalk on Front Street, Oak Street, Laurel Street, and Railroad Avenue. Work areas have been selected based on locations that have experienced the greatest settlement between brick pavers and concrete sidewalks, or that have been affected by tree roots heaving sidewalks and tree boxes.
Outgrown trees will be removed and recycled into mulch. New trees, which are less likely to cause sidewalk lifting issues, will be planted in their place. This includes species such as the Armstrong Maple, the Bowhall Maple, and Chancellor Littleleaf Linden.
The work, with contractor ICI Construction, is estimated to be complete in June. During this time, residents and visitors are advised to use caution and follow any detour or safety instructions provided.
To minimize disruptions to vehicle and pedestrian traffic, the tree removal phase will take place at night beginning at around midnight Monday morning, through Friday, April 5.
