PORT ANGELES — In NWAC action last night the 5th ranked Peninsula Pirate women won their opener at home against Whatcom 61-46. It was a familiar name that led the way for the Pirates, former Neah Bay Red Devil Allie Greene hit for 15 points.
The Pirates jumped out to a quick 17-5 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter. Ciera Agasiva hit for 11 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Jenilee Donovan hit for 10 points. Lexie Mackey hit for 8 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. The Pirates are 1-0 and 8-2 overall.
The Pirate men led by one point at the half but lost to Whatcom 87-82.
Ese Onakpoma led the way with 20 points. Javon Ervin hit for 17 points. Former Roughrider Wyatt Dunning scored 13 points and Patrick Odingo scored 11 points. The Pirates are 7-8 overall.
The Pirates travel to Edmonds for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon with the women tipping off at 2 pm. Both games will be broadcast live on Newsradio KONP. Oly Archibald and Bill Bates will have the broadcast.

It’s a big night of basketball tonight at Sequim as the Wolves will host the Roughriders for a doubleheader. The boys will tip off at 5:15.
In the boys’ game, the Roughriders are tied for 2nd place with Bremerton with 4-2 records. The Wolves are a game back with a 3-3 record. The Roughriders have an RPI ranking of #12 while the Wolves are ranked at 27th. The Roughriders are averaging 65 points per game and giving up 57 points per game. The Wolves are averaging 62 points per game and giving up 58 points per game.
In the girls’ game, both teams are tied for 1st place with 5-1 league records. The Wolves have an RPI ranking of #8 while the Roughriders are ranked 27th. The Wolves have the #1 ranked offense in the league averaging 55 points per game to the Roughriders 49 points per game. Both teams give up 44 points per game.
The Wolves have 3 starters averaging double figures in Freshman point guard Gracie Chartraw 16 points per game. Senior wing Jolene Vaara 14 points per game and junior Bobbie Mixon 10 points per game. Junior forward Libby Turella is averaging 6 points per game and 6’1 senior post Dani Herman has been tough in the paint averaging 8 points per game and pulling down 10 rebounds per game.
For the Riders, all eyes will be watching the physical play in the paint with 5’10” senior Paige Mason and 6’0″ junior Lexie Smith mixing it up against Turella and Herman. In the back court, Roughrider guards Teanna Clark, Lindsey Smith and Izzy Felton will go at it against the athletic and talented tandem of Chartraw and Mixson.

The Wolves beat the Roughriders in both meetings last season on their way to the Olympic League championship and a 4th place ranking at the state tournament.
