LOCAL SPORTS: High school bowling, Peninsula Pirate men try to rebound

PORT ANGELES — The Roughrider bowling team knocked off Olympic yesterday sweeping the Trojans 7-0. The Roughriders are 3-1 on the season.

Abby Robinson led all bowlers with a 170 while Sophie Constant bowled a 140 and Xoey Penn threw a 135. During the Baker games Jule Getzin and Kenadie Ring joined the varsity Lanes to help complete the sweep.

“We’ve had a variety of players step up and contribute in each victory,” observed Roughrider coach Becky Gundersen.

The Sequim Wolves 1-3 travel to Bremerton today with a,2:45 pm start.

In NWAC basketball action the Peninsula Pirate men travel to Mount Vernon Friday to participate in the 3-day, Skagit Valley Turkey shoot crossover tournament.

The Pirates open tournament play Friday at 5 pm against Big Bend Community College of Moses Lake. The Vikings are 0-2 on the season coming off a 4-21 season. The Vikings lost to Bellevue 89-66 and Shoreline 94-69.

The Vikings are led by Malik Beauford, a 6’4 sophomore out of Palatka, Florida. Beaufort averages 19 points per game. Point Guard Gideon Harris a 6’1″ freshman out of Albuquerque, New Mexico averages 12 points per game. The Vikings have players on their roster from the Ivory Coast and 2 from France, but no players from the state of Washington.

The Pirates (0-2) have been out rebounded on the boards 48-28. Aiden Olmstead the 6’5″ sophomore out of North Kitsap has missed both games with an ankle issue. Olmstead is a beast on the boards. Pirate Head Coach Bryce Jacobsen says Olmstead is expected back this weekend and the Pirates have missed his leadership.

Pirate guard Javon Ervin is averaging 19 points per game

Ese Onakpoma has led the Pirates as expected averaging 17 points per game and shooting a red hot 56% from the field. Point guard Javon Ervin has had 2 great games as well averaging 19 points per game, 7 rebounds per game and shooting 40% from the field. Beni Njomo, a 6’5″ freshman from California, is averaging 11 points per game and is shooting 56% from the field. Former Roughrider Wyatt Dunning is averaging 8 points per game.
