PORT ANGELES – Clallam County Deputy Prosecutor Matt Roberson announced his campaign for the 24th District’s state representative position 1, currently held by Mike Chapman, who is seeking a state senator position in 2024. Roberson works in the Prosecutor’s felony division in Port Angeles.
Roberson says his will be an issues-driven campaign, and he cites public safety, quality of education, and the cost of living as some of things he’ll focus on.
He said he thinks voters are ready for a change.
“I think this year, I think both parties are going to focus on the 24th District. You know, frankly, there’s not too many seats around the state that can be flipped, and it’s my hope to make the 24th District one of those seats.”
So far, Roberson, a Republican, has one opponent in the race, Makah Tribal leader Nate Tyler, who is running as a Democrat.
Originally from Tacoma, Roberson and his wife Arielle moved to Port Angeles in 2016. He believes his work in the Prosecutor’s Office has given him a rare insight into the problems facing our community, and says it’s also helped him build strong relationships with law enforcement and tribal groups, and local advocates.
“I care about this community. I want to see it thrive and do well. I’ve been blessed to be the first guy in my family to go to college and everything, and live the American dream. I’ve got a 19-month-old kid who I want to see have it even better than I do, and I think we need to change the status quo and get Olympia working a little bit differently than it does currently.”
