SPOKANE — The Washington State Girls High School Soccer Tournament begins today with #16 seed (11-6) Port Angeles taking on #1 seed (18-0) West Valley of Spokane.

West Valley outscored their opponents 81-4. The Roughriders outscored their opponents 39-24. Kickoff is at 5 pm in Spokane.

The #10 seed Sequim Wolves will travel tomorrow to Ridgefield to take on the #7 seed Spudders. Kickoff is at 5 pm.

Sally Cole’s Roughrider swim team is heading to the Federal Way Aquatic Center for this weekend’s state meet. The Roughriders will have 7 athletes participating in 10 events. Harper McGuire, Danika Asgeirsson and Yau Fu will lead the way each participating in 4 events. All 3 Relay teams qualified for state. The 400 Free style finished 2nd in district with Lynzee Reid, Danika Asgeirsson, Yau Fu and Harper McGuire. The 200 free style relay finished 3rd with Lizzy Shaw, Danika Asgeirsson, Yau Fu and Harper McGuire. The 200-medley relay finished 4th with Danika Asgeirsson, Brooke St Luise, Yau Fu and Amayah Nelson. In individual events, in the 200 Free style Harper McGuire placed 1st and Lynzee Reid placed 6th. In the 100 butterfly, Yau Fu finished 3rd. In the 500 free style. Danika Asgeirsson placed 5th and Amayah Nelson placed 6th.

Harper McGuire, Yau Fu and Danika Asgeirsson led the Roughriders to the state swim meet. Each will participate in four events.

The NWAC post season soccer awards are out, and Peninsula women’s soccer coach Kanyon Anderson was named Northern Conference coach of the year for the 9th time in his 14 years as the head coach of the Pirates.

Making the All-Northern team are Taya Bohenko, Gemma Roland, Talia Marini, Lauren La Fountain, Caneel Corpuz and Shawna Larson.

For the Pirates men’s team, there were 5 Pirates selected. Alfie Tucker, Abdurahim Leigh, Nil Grau, Lauren Lettow and Tsubasa Abe.

Nil Grau was named the MVP of the Northern Division.

KONP Newsradio will have another special guest on Friday nights Port Angeles – Tumwater State football broadcast pre-game show. 1983 Port Angeles high school graduate Derrick Fox is the CEO of the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio Texas. Last year the Alamo Bowl featured Washington and Texas. Fox will talk about his days as a kid growing up in Port Angeles, his days at Duke University and the challenges of running one of the biggest college football bowl games in the country.
