PORT ANGELES — It was a weekend of upsets, and they came in favor of the Port Angeles Roughrider football and soccer teams, and the Sequim Wolves soccer team.

On Friday night the Roughrider football team cashed in their ticket to the state tournament with a total 2nd half domination of Franklin Pierce. Down 18-14 at the half, the Roughrider coaching staff changed up their defense to a 9-man blitzing front with two safeties. The high-powered running attack of the Cardinals was completely shut down. On offense the Roughriders gave the Cardinals a taste of their own medicine by running the exact same T formation. Senior running backs Jason Hawes and Landon Jones smashed through the Cardinals defense like two tornados smashing through a Kansas farmhouse. The Roughriders outscored the Cardinals 14-0 in the 2nd half for the 28-18 win.

The Roughriders received their state tournament draw yesterday afternoon and it’s just a match up against the #1 seed state power Tumwater. The T-Birds 10-0 average 53 points per game. 8 times the T-Birds scored at least 55 points. In week two they beat North Kitsap in Poulsbo 34-13.

The Roughriders will take on Tumwater Friday night at Tumwater Stadium with the kickoff at 7 pm. We will broadcast that game here on KONP.

In girls soccer action the biggest upset came as the Roughriders knocked off 4th seed Enumclaw in a shootout after neither team could score in overtime. The win qualified the Roughriders for the state tournament and knocked Enumclaw out.

The Roughriders, the #16 seed in the state tournament travel to Spokane tomorrow for a 5 pm kickoff against #1 seed West Valley of Spokane.

The Sequim Wolves knocked off #3 Seed Sammamish on their own field 3-2 in overtime to earn the 10th seed to the state tournament.

Kiley Winter opened the scoring for the Wolves with a goal at the 42nd minute mark. At the 48-minute mark Taryn Johnson scored on a header on a perfect corner kick from Raimey Brewer. In overtime, Raimey Brewer was the biggest star as she ended the game with a goal.

The Wolves’ Raimey Brewer had an assist and scored the game winner in overtime as the Wolves beat Sammamish 3-2 to place 3rd in the district tournament. When and where the Wolves play #7 seed Ridgefield will be announced today

In volleyball action it was a tough weekend for Sequim and Port Angeles. The Roughriders were one and done losing to Orting 3-1.

The Wolves were blanked by North Kitsap 3-0 but came back to beat Kingston 3-0. Then in a winner to state loser out contest the Wolves lost a heart breaker to Sammamish 3-2.

In NWAC soccer action, both Pirate teams won their quarter final matches to advance to the Semifinals Friday in Tukwila.

The Pirate men won 3-0 over Clark with Nil Grau scoring 2 goals. The Pirates will play Columbia Basin at 1:30 pm.
